Dentists are licensed health-care providers who diagnose and treat patients' oral problems. Dentists filled 141,900 positions in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. They must complete at least eight years of school beyond high school to become a general practice dentist and at least 10 years to become a specialist.
